Bare copper wire is used for overhead electrical transmission and distribution and for grounding electrical systems where high conductivity and flexibility are required. Though it is suitable for numerous applications, bare copper is generally unsuited for underground applications or harsh environments.

Bare copper wire is primarily used for grounding and does not have a protective coating or insulation. Depending on the application, bare copper wires can be solid or stranded, uncoated or coated, and hard, medium-hard drawn, or soft annealed.
