SIS Wire, also known as Switchboard or Panelboard wire, is a type of building wire typically made with a tin-coated copper conductor insulated with thermoset cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE). The conductors are stranded for high flexibility, making installation in tight spaces easier, and are tinned to facilitate soldering.

KrisTech’s dual-rated SIS/XHHW wire consists of a single Class K-stranded conductor made of tin-coated copper. SIS conductors are most often used in switchboards and panel boards as specified in the National Electrical Code. Although SIS is not recognized in the NEC Article 310 for use in conduit, Kris-Tech’s is dual-rated as XHHW-2 and is approved for use in recognized raceways. Final approval always rests with your local electrical inspector.

Its VW-1 rating also makes it suitable for switchboards, panel boards, control panels, automobile factories, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and other industrial applications.

SIS/XHHW wire can safely operate in temperatures ranging from -40°C to 90°C in wet locations and -40°C to 105°C in dry locations.

KrisTech’s SIS wire meets the following standards and tests, including:

  • ASTM B-33
  • UL 44
  • CSA C22.2 NO. 38-10
  • NEC NFPA 70, NEC 310

  • Conductors – Single conductors are available in solid or stranded and annealed or hardened configurations. Tin-coated copper conductors are standard in SIS constructions.
  • Insulation – Conductors are insulated with a concentrically applied gray XLPE (crosslinked polyethylene) that is VW-1 flame and “Oil and Gasoline Resistant I” rated. An optional non-VW-1 flame rating is available on request. CT (FT4) rating in sizes #1/0 and larger is also available upon request. All black insulation is rated “Sunlight Resistant.” All colored insulation is rated “Sunlight Resistant” in sizes #6 AWG and larger, and optional in sizes #8 AWG and smaller.

Print legends on the wire include the manufacturer, conductor size, voltage rating, UL symbol (if applicable), and type designation. Standard length spools are 500 or 2,500 feet.
