Feeding Success: KrisTech Wire Houston Supports Kids’ Meals
No one should have to go hungry, especially the smallest members of our community.
Harris County, Texas, home to Houston, has an estimated 100,000 preschool-aged children living with food insecurity. That’s roughly one in four preschool-aged children living in the area, according to data from Kids’ Meals, a Houston-based nonprofit serving Harris and Montgomery Counties.
This year, the organization says it’s on pace to deliver a jaw-dropping 4.2 million meals to kids across 53 zip codes in and around Houston. But meeting such a huge need requires a lot of hands and plenty of time.
Seeing the need, KrisTech Wire stepped up to answer the bell.
Delivering Meals with Artistic Flair
The KrisTech Wire Houston team spent several hours working alongside other Kids’ Meals volunteers, making sandwiches, packing food, and decorating paper lunch bags for local children in need.
Customer Service Specialist Blanca Hernandez helped organize KrisTech’s participation with the nonprofit and was excited to share KrisTech’s community spirit with a worthwhile group.
“This was truly a team effort. Having volunteered with this nonprofit before, I knew how impactful their mission is and how rewarding the experience can be,” Hernandez explained. “This was the perfect opportunity for our team to collaborate and team-build while giving back to our community. Knowing that our efforts made a positive impact made the event even more special.”
For three hours, volunteers packed thousands of bags of pretzels, Chex Mix, and other goodies while learning about the community and people they serve.
“I love knowing our efforts helped make a positive impact by providing healthy lunches to families throughout the Houston area,” Hernandez said. “It was especially rewarding to see our team come together to decorate more than 500+ brown paper lunch bags, helping bring a smile to children’s faces. Supporting such a meaningful cause while making a difference in our community was a wonderful experience.”
Fighting Hunger with Action
Since opening in 2006, Kids’ Meals has grown from two vans delivering across two zip codes to a sprawling 50,000 sq. ft. warehouse that delivers 15,000 free meals to children Monday through Friday, year-round. When school is out, the need rises to as many as 20,000 meals daily for children up to age 18.
“We’re thrilled to be part of such a meaningful event in Houston and to get our CARES team involved locally,” KrisTech’s Director of Employee Engagement, Wendy Calabrese, said. “Helping fight hunger and making sure children have enough to eat is something we can all play a role in. We’re grateful for the opportunity to come together, give back, and make a difference for families in the Houston community.”
